[ve'risimu], Érico Lopes, brasilianischer Schriftsteller, * Cruz Alta (Rio Grande do Sul) 17. 12. 1905, ✝ Pôrto Alegre 28. 11. 1975. Nach dem Vorbild der »Comédie humaine« von H. de Balzac, aber auch angeregt von A. Huxley und S. Maugham, beschrieb Veríssimo in großen Romanzyklen am Beispiel von Einzelschicksalen und Familiengeschichten die Gesellschaft seiner Heimatregion; verfasste auch Biographien, Essays sowie Reise- und Kinderliteratur.
 
Werke: Romane: Clarissa (1933); Caminhos cruzados (1935); Música ao longe (1935); Um lugar ao sol (1936); Olhai os lírios do campo (1938; deutsch Die Lilien auf dem Felde); Saga (1940); O resto é silêncio (1943); O senhor embaixador (1965; deutsch Seine Exzellenz, der Botschafter); O prisioneiro (1967); Incidente em Antares (1971).
